My Mini Satins

10th place Mini Satin Open Sweeps

2008-2009

Random Thoughts

With the end of 2009 coming up much sooner than I'd like, I decided it's time to think about where I actually stand with my Mini Satin herd compared to where I had expected to be.

The totally unexpected success I had with the W21 doe was an incredible boost to my confidence, but I find I have put alot of pressure on myself to produce more of the same quality.  Having lost her sire in the extreme OK weather this summer will make that difficult.

I have decided to breed her to the Siamese buck I got from Jackie Marshall.  Since any buck in my barn will be an outcross, I should use her to get the best Siamese I can to put on the table next spring.

I have already bred my little black doe back the her sire,  the black buck I got from Darren Blue.  I bred her mom, a broken black also from Darren, to the Siamese buck.  Hopeful for several in the litter since she threw a Siamese already!

I have a trio of Chins - too bad it's two bucks and one doe!  Actually, it's a good thing! I'm planning to breed the doe to one of the bucks, and then use both bucks with some white does from the same lines.

I do have a promising pair of whites coming up, and lots of white brood stock to continue working with that variety.

So I guess I do have a plan after all!  I will just have to do the best I can with what I have on hand until I make a better rabbit!

Hope to see lots of Mini Satin folks at the Satin Nationals in Hutchison KS next April!

When I first got my Mini Satins, I was considering discontinuing my Holland Lops altogether.  I got through my difficulties with the Hollands at that time and they remain my main focus.

Our area, OK, KS, MO, AR, TX and NE, is a hot bed of awfully good Mini Satins from experienced breeders.  I am very pleased with the success I have had, considering the very stiff competition I encounter on a regular basis.

I find that Mini Satins are quite easy to breed, cull and grow.

This is a hardy breed with rarely less than six in a litter.
